The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has put in place contingencies to ensure the safety and welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in areas with large numbers of Filipinos, such as Taiwan.
In a statement, DFA Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said that the agency is closely monitoring the situation in Taiwan and is ready to provide assistance to OFWs should they need it. He also noted that the Philippine government is working closely with Taiwanese authorities to ensure the safety of Filipinos living and working there.
Locsin added that the DFA has established an emergency hotline for OFWs who may be facing difficulties or are in need of assistance. The hotline can be reached at +63 2 834-3000.
The DFA also said that it has set up a task force dedicated to providing assistance to OFWs in Taiwan. The task force will coordinate with relevant government agencies, non-government organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure that the needs of OFWs are addressed.
Furthermore, the DFA has urged all OFWs in Taiwan to register with their respective embassies so that they can be contacted in case of emergencies. The agency also reminded them to practice preventive measures against COVID-19, such as wearing face masks, washing hands regularly, and avoiding crowded places.
The DFA assured OFWs that it is doing its best to ensure their safety and welfare while abroad. It also encouraged them to stay informed about developments related to their work and living conditions in Taiwan.
